Licensing rules

One license per server, with no limit on the number of employees. Users who are already connected are not disconnected in any license state.

  • The license is locked to the first server registered using its installation code.
  • While that gateway is active, you cannot install the same license on another server.
  • Removing the gateway from the server with the uninstall command automatically releases the license. This does not count toward the release limit.
  • Each license lets you generate up to 200 profiles per hour and up to 2,000 per day.

If you need to move a license to another server but cannot remove the old gateway because it is unavailable, click Release in the customer's license list.

  • You can release each license up to 3 times every 30 days. Further releases are blocked. To request another release, contact support (see Escalation and support).
  • After release, the old gateway no longer receives authorization from nuVPN. Devices connected to it continue to work, but it cannot generate new profiles. Its console shows an error connecting to nuVPN servers. We recommend removing it.
  • To install on the new server, create New installation token. The new server has its own address and key, so employees need new profiles from it.
  • Releasing the license does not cancel it. Billing continues as usual.

If you clone a virtual machine with a gateway installed, both copies report as the same gateway. The system flags Suspected clone when:

  • The reported machine or hardware ID differs from the ID recorded during installation;
  • Reports arrive from more than one machine within a short period;
  • Reports alternate between two addresses within a short period. A one-time address change, such as a change to a dynamic IP address, is not considered cloning.

What to do: shut down or delete the copy. Do not run uninstall on the copy. The copy and the original gateway share the same identity, so uninstalling the copy also releases the original gateway's license. Only nuVPN can clear the flag, so contact support after you have dealt with the copy.

  • Active: The gateway generates new profiles. A paid license renews monthly and has no expiration date.
  • Grace period: As in the active state, you can generate new profiles, and billing for the license continues.
  • Expired: The trial period has ended. The gateway does not generate new profiles.
  • Revoked by us: nuVPN has revoked the license. The gateway does not generate new profiles.
  • Cancelled: The cancellation date set by the partner has been reached. The gateway does not generate new profiles, and billing for the license stops.

In all states, devices that are already connected continue to work, and the customer's IT administrator can still revoke access in the console. An inactive license only blocks new profile generation and new installations.
