What Your ISP Really Sees About You — and How a VPN Stops It
Everything you do online — every site, every app, every video — physically passes through your internet service provider (ISP). It doesn't just happen to see your traffic; it must see it in order to deliver it. The only question is how closely it looks.
What your ISP actually sees
Even when you browse sites over HTTPS (the padlock in your browser), your provider still sees:
- Every domain you visit. HTTPS encrypts the content, but DNS lookups and the connection handshake reveal the site's name. Your ISP knows you visited a bank, a particular news site, or a dating site — even if it can't see what you did there.
- When, and for how long. Precise timestamps for every connection. From that it's easy to infer when you're home, when you sleep, and what your habits are.
- How much data moved. Traffic volumes per destination — enough to identify streaming, video calls, or downloads.
- Who was connecting. The connection is tied to your IP address, and that IP is registered to your name on the contract. There is zero anonymity here.
What happens with that data
It depends on the country and the provider, but commonly: logs retained for long periods under regulation, aggregated browsing data sold to advertisers where that's legal, throttling of streaming or torrent traffic, and responses to government data requests. Even if your ISP is "one of the good ones" — the data exists, accumulates, and can leak.
